BMC Elementary
 |
We had the exciting idea to launch a new math circle
group for kids of elementary school age in Fall 2009. The target age of this group is
grades 1-3. The main objective of this group is to develop a positive
attitude towards mathematics by introducing young children to the elements of
mathematical culture.
|
The meetings will be full of hand-on activities,
games and short problems, which will hopefully establish the enjoyable
image of mathematics in the minds of the participants. This idea has
found a warm response from the parents. In order to accomodate all the participants, we decided to split the group into two identical sessions:
6:00-6:55pm and 7:00-7:55pm. Both sessions take place on Tuesdays at 891 Evans.

Announcements
To CURRENT BMC Elementary Parents:
Thank you for enrolling your child in BMC Elementary, Fall 2009. We are
very pleased with the interest in this new program, and we continue to
receive additional requests from parents of prospective students leading to a
waiting list of students for the spring semester.
The re-enrollment for Spring 2010 is now open only to
students who are currently enrolled in BMC-elementary Fall 2009. If you
are interested in securing your child's spot in the program for next
spring, please send a re-enrollment request e-mail to Elena Blanter, (eblanter@sbcglobal.net)
with "BMC Elementary: Spring 2010 re-enrollment" in
the subject line. Please state your child's name, date of birth, current grade and
school in the body of your e-mail.
Class fee for the spring semester will be $85 ($75 for the class, plus $10
for the class materials). Please make the check payable to the "Art of
Problem Solving Foundation," with "BMC Elementary" on the memo line and
give the check to either Laura Givental or Elena Blanter during one of the
regular fall classes. The spring enrollment will be closed on December
10th. We will then offer the remaining spots to the students on the
waiting list.
To NEW prospective BMC Elementary parents:
Thank you for your interest in the BMC Elementary. At this point,
enrollment for the fall semester is closed, and both elementary classes
are full. However, we will put your name on our waiting list for the
spring semester.
We are very pleased with the interest in this new program. Currently, we
do not have the resources to expand it in the spring semester. Spring
re-enrollment for current students will be closed in early December. If
spaces become available after the spring re-enrollment is closed, we
will contact you. Class enrollment will be granted to new students on a
first-come-first-serve basis.
If you have an older child, 5th grade or above, you are welcome to have them try
BMC Beginners. To apply to BMC Beginner, click on the "Apply for BMC" button to the left.

Instructors
The BMC Elementary will be coordinated by Natalia Rozhkovskaya ( rozhkovs@math.ksu.edu).
She is Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Kansas State
University - Manhattan. Her primary research interests are representation
theory of Lie groups, Lie algebras and quantum groups. In Fall 2009, she
will participate in the program in Tropical Geometry at MSRI. In her hometown she has organized a small math circle for first-grade students,
who enjoy this experience a lot. Moving to Berkeley for few months, she would like to offer her experience and enthusiasm to create a chapter
of math circle for little ones.

A local resident of the East Bay, Laura Givental ( Givental@sbcglobal.net)
will join Natalia Rozhkovskaya to teach the BMC Elementary in the Fall
semester of 2009. After graduating from a math and physics high school,
Laura obtained her B.A. and Masters Degrees in applied mathematics at the
Moscow school of " Kerosinka". She
has been working, first in Riussia and then in the US, as a software
engineer and consultant. Her son Emile, currently a fifth-grader, first
visited BMC in 1998 prenatally, and now feels ready to attend the middle
school chapter of it on his own. Educating Emile has been challenging and
rewarding for Laura, and she will bring this unique expertise to BMC
Elementary.

Elena Blanter, ( eblanter@sbcglobal.net), a Berkeley resident, will join Natalia and Laura to teach the BMC Elementary in the Fall semester.
Elena received her M.A. in Mathematics from the St. Petersburg University in Russia and has teaching credentials from the same school.
Elena's many years of experience span mathematical risk modeling and statistical analysis
and development of financial analytical software. In addition, Elena is privately teaching
mathematics to elementary school children. She is familiar with various math programs,
including Singapore Math, and is engaged to teach a Magic Math after school enrichment
program in Orinda. She is thrilled to have the opportunity to bring her experience and
passions to the BMC Elementary.

Mathematics from Moscow University in 1971. After having held various research and teaching positions in the
former Soviet Union, Sergei immigrated to the United States in 1980. He was a Research Associate at the
Computer Science Department, UC Berkeley, from June 1980 until September 1981 when he joined the Mathematics
Department of SFSU. Sergei has been pursuing research in functional analysis and mathematical social sciences
